My opinion is similar to LiquidTopaz's. I think the first book in a series is almost always good...
But part of the reason I didn't like New Moon so much when I first read it, was becuase I didn't really read it. Well, I did read it, but not completely. I was so concerned about Edward coming back that it took a lot of self-control for me not to just skip to the ending. Subsequently, the middle of New Moon involving Bella and Jacob I really partially skimmed. Of course, after I read the book and found the ending, I re-read it. But first impressions are lasting. I'm sure I'm not the only person who, during New Moon when Edward left, had two emotions: Firstly, shock. But, after the initial suprise, I was ready to throw the book through the wall.
There's something special about Twilight, it's true. But I feel like Meyer's writing itself has progressed since her first book. Not only does Eclipse have deeper themes, as before mentioned, the writing itself seems improved; but it may just be me.
The whole significance of Eclipse seems to be that, besides Bella making her choice between Edward and Jacob, she fully appreciates the consequences of her actions. Before, she was just ready to take a blind jump into vampirism, but now, she realizes the reprecussions of her actions. I think it's better that it happened this way. But the entire book of Eclipse seemed to me like a enormous set-up for the coming book.
Really the only part I didn't like about Eclipse was the ending. Of course I have to appreciate the acceptional writing and significance, but the last line was heartbreaking. And we have more than a year left to wait to find out what happens.
