I think that if Edward didnt return that Bella would soon live and let live. She might have... after a period of time... went to Jacob and tried to further their relationship, but Edward would always have a special place in her heart.

She might have tried to but it would have never been the same. She loves Edward in a whole different way. But yeah she probably would have married him.

Nothing would ever been what it was without Edward, nor would the book have been so exciting to read.

Wow, this is going to take some time to answer.
I don't think this is as black-and-white as "if Edward hadn't come back..." Because Edward din't come back. At least, not yet. It's more of an "if this particular thing hadn't happened..." sort of thing.
Okay, let's say Bella hadn't jumped off the cliff (oh, that's right, she fell). Let's say she had decided the weather was too bad to even get near the cliff. She never got so close to Victoria (who, if you remember, was in the water). She didn't almost drown. Jacob never had to rescue her. Alice never saw her "commiting suicide." Alice never told Rosalie, who hunted down Edward to tell him. The Cullens never heard anything about Bella or Victoria or the werewolves. Everything, essentially, stayed as it had been. Bella was close to giving in to Jacob's advances. We all know it. If she hadn't been so shocked by Edward's voice telling her to be happy, or if Jacob hadn't pulled away too soon, it might have happened right there before Alice had appeared. And it would have happened eventually after that. But then there's Edward. He would have come back anyways. He was obviously not having the most pleasant of times coping. He would have come back soon, especially if he found out he had been tracking a false lead on Victoria. And even if Bella had started something with Jacob, she would go back to Edward. It wouldn't have been quite so dire, but they would have gotten back together (Jacob would have had an absolute fit).
Well, what about if Bella had jumped (erm, fallen) off the cliff, but Alice never bothered to tell Rosalie or Rosalie hadn't gotten ahold of Edward. Alice was seeing how badly everything had effected Bella. Edward's plan had gone quite wrong and Alice would have done something. Edward would have somehow come back once more.
I think if Edward was still "living", it is impossible to imagine any logical way that they would not find their way back together again.
So what if Bella had been too late to save Edward? There's an interesting question. Who's to say Bella would even be strong enough to survive. What kept her going was Charlie and Renee, but I think it was also the thought that out there, somewhere, was Edward, still living and maybe even happy. I think that without that thought, Bella would cease to have any sense of self-preservation whatsoever. I don't think she would actively seek out to hurt herself, but then again, wasn't it inactivity that caused the winds to push her off the cliff? Could it be considered inactivity that she didn't think of how the motorcycle may hurt her? Maybe she had already been at that place where she just didn't care. It's a depressing thought. But would she have let herself live if Jacob was there to support her, to be there for her in her times of need, to help her when she was in trouble? I really don't think so myself. She may have givin it a chance, but she wouldn't put any effort into anything at that point.
Now let's say Edward died trying to track Victoria (I know, I know, what a travesty). Bella never finds out (to make this work better, we'll say Alice never even came back). Victoria is killed by the wolves before she even makes one neworn. The Volturi never find out someone named Bella exists, much less that she knows so much about the vampires. The Cullens never make contact with her ever again. In fact, she never sees another vampire for the rest of her life. Jacob keeps trying to convince her to go out with him. I think, in those exact circumstances, they would have a moderate chance. And I'd be rooting for them. Bella wouldn't be all there most of the time (when is she?), but I think Jacob's personality was such that he'd be able to stay with her and work through it all. If he didn't imprint on someone, that is.
So this is less a question of "Edward never comes back," and more a question of "is there even a situation where this could possibly even have a chance to start?"

I think that under the circumstances that were discribed in your post that if that were to actually happen then Bella would have coped with herself and given into Jacob over time... But seeing that she knew that Edward was still alive, via hearing him in her thoughts and everything, she couldnt just let go and enjoy her life without him because she knew that he was still alive and she knew that he had trusted her enough to tell her that he was a vampire. But if she had never had the chance to have contact with Edward again I too think that she would have at least tried to move on and things with Jacob would have worked out to an extent. Nothing like Edward would be to her but something special that only a relationship with Jacob can have.

I think that if Edward didnt come back at all, Bella would have sensed that he wouldnt come back at all, and would have gone with her thoughts about jacob and liking him...

timeless@gmail.com I think that Bella and Jacob might have went out but, it would have been nothing close to like being with Edward!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I agree. She would have loved him in her own way, but that love wouldn't have compared to the love she has with Edward.

i think Bella will learn to love Jacob if Edward didn't comeback, because she's starting to accept the fact that Edward didn't really love her, and Jacob is there for her all the time..
