UGH! I just want to RIP Pippa's hair out. She's so annoying and I hope she dies in the next book ;D
I'm so nice, eh?

Don't worry. She bugs me too. You're amongst family. A weird dysfunctional family composed of two species willing to fight to the death. But a family nonetheless. ;D

That's very reassuring, we're such a loving family. But your support is much appreciated ;D

As it should. Speaking of support, Ann certainly needs it. I felt so bad for her when I learned she was cutting herself.

I just wanted to give her a big hug, her life sounded so miserable before she had friends.

It's not so easy. Someone depressed cannot see life as rationally as someone else can. Depression is the result of chemical imbalances in the brain. A kick won't fix anything.

Oh you guys, Pippa's not THAT bad-!
But a chemical imbalance??- it's a mental thing people do to themselves when they're stupid and think life is wasteful.
Does anyone know about how this 'chemical imbalance' even happens? I know anti-depressents are supposed to cure them, but like, I know it's from depression, but how- anatomically?

All moods in the brain are controlled by specific neurotransmitters. For example, the high people feel from cocaine is because the drug raises dopamine levels (a neurotransmitter) in the brain, giving you that giddy, happy feeling. Yeah, all moods depend on chemicals; it's how Jasper affects people. He directly affects the neurotransmitters in the brain making a person happy, lethargic, angry, etc.
In the case of depression, it can have numerous causes but one is a lack of a specific type of neurotransmitter, serotonin. Serotonin balances the moods and when the numbers go down, the person can become depressed. Depression has nothing to do with the person being crazy, stupid or pathetic. It is considered a disease and a serious one at that.
I went with chemical imbalances as a theory as I do not know her family so I do not know if it is genetic although the environment she grew up in certainly had something to do with it.
Ann was depressed and dealt with the feelings the depression caused by cutting her. Not the most intelligent thing to do but depression doesn't entail rational thinking.
Anti-depression medications (depending on the medication) are supposed to raise serotonin or norepinephrine (another neurotransmitter) levels, thus helping the person. They don't cure depression, however. The person needs therapy for that to find out what is affecting them so strongly and then how to deal with it.
As for why they occur, there are theories concerning that but scientists do not know yet. It's why there's no medication that cures depression; they don't know why serotonin drops so they don't know how to raise the levels and keep them permanently up.
Wow, that's a long post. Sorry for all the medical jargon but it would have been worse if I had started saying, "Well the whatchamacallit does something to the gray blob-thing that then causes the thingy with the other thingy..."

question did you come up with all that in the sense of did you know all that or did you get it out of a book or off of the internet?
and all that grey blob talk is fun to write though but you explanation was very good so now i understand it better but still they are trying to help Anne and she isn't even trying to do anything i think thats why it makes me mad she just sits and takes whatever is shoved at her GRRRRRRRRR and then cuts herself as if thats going tot make it better but i guess ranting isn't going to help her

I knew all that and checked my books to make sure I had it right. I'm studying medicine, so I should know this stuff. I can understand Ann and why she is like that, but I sympathize with Felicity. I'd probably act like her. I wouldn't be able to deal with a depressive person; I don't have that kind of patience. One of my friends was like that. I could understand why and I tried to help him but I still wanted to rip his hair out when he started bemoaning his life. It is incredibly frustrating.
