Because we need a thread to discuss our resident human-eaters.
When I read the part of the Volturi on New Moon, I was actually grinning every time Aro opened his mouth. Hell, I was laughing along with him while I read! But, I don't see him as a happy-go-lucky, overenthusiastic airhead. He definitely appeared to me as being a lot more dangerous than he appeared but that he hid that part of him very carefully. That way, another vampire would underestimate him and then find himself torn limb from limb and set on fire.
Caius I don't care much for but Marcus really struck a chord in me. Carlisle theorizes is that vampires who feed on humans have a harder time forming bonds based on love (New Moon, Chapter 19, p428). And here we have Marcus who, along with Aro and Caius, epitomizes the very stereo-type of bloodthirsty human-killing vampire. However, he loved his mate so much that when she died, he actually stopped talking. We know what Bella endured; imagine how the pain must have been--must still be--for Marcus with his vampiric perfect memory bank. It's no wonder he's a zombie.

Ugh, I do not like the Volturi guard. They all seem so arrogant to me.

Ugh, I do not like the Volturi guard. They all seem so arrogant to me. I know but I think we all would be too if we were the elite of the elite. Think about it, one of the reasons no one messes with the Volturi is because of the guard. The guard freaked me out. Forget the Volturi, the guards are the ones I do not want to meet in a dark deserted alley.

Oh definetly. The Volturi don't LOOK all that scary (though I'm sure they could if they wanted to) and Bella said they looked so frail and delicate. Felix and Demetri sound extremely intimidating in comparison.

The Volturi don't LOOK all that scary (though I'm sure they could if they wanted to) and Bella said they looked so frail and delicate. Felix and Demetri sound extremely intimidating in comparison. And that is why the Volturi are so dangerous. First, you only ever see three of them (if you're very lucky or very unlucky--whatever floats your boat). The two females, who I'm willing to bet my entire life savings are Aro's and Caius's mates respectively, don't come out. You never see the two females, why? And then of course you have these three, an airhead with ADHD, a PMS-ing bitter old man, and a zombie that never talks. Not exactly what people would consider scary. But, they have managed to stay alive for three thousand years and have held power over Volterra and the vampire world, for approximately 1000 years (I did the research). They're not idiots. Whoever is truly in power (sometimes it's the person behind the throne) cannot afford to be stupid or they'll have the power taken from them. Moreover, why don't we hear more about old vampires like them? The second-oldest coven is the Denali coven and they're 1005 years younger. How did the Volturi survive and stay as rulers of the vampire world? They don't look it but those three men could probably pound the Cullens into the ground, without use of the guard. And that's without adding the two females to the mix. I really want to learn more about those two women. And we will probably hear more about them in future books. When describing the Volturi, Alice mentioned those two. Stephenie Meyer would not have mentioned them if they were unimportant. It would have been easier to just keep us believing the Volturi was composed of only the three we learned about in Twilight. I wonder if they're even more vicious and cruel than their mates.

The Volturi scare me MORE than the guard, and Alcyone has listed more than enough reasons to support that fear, so I am not going to repeat them all.
The guard follows orders, and without the Volturi, would do nothing, so without the Volturi, the guard amount to little (in my eyes) Also, I think that maybe part of making up the guard is to mask the real horror. To make the Volturi seem insignificant and possibly even appealing compared to the big, tough, menacing vamps.
And, again, I agree with Alcyone. The idea of the females is interesting...very interesting

To make the Volturi seem insignificant and possibly even appealing compared to the big, tough, menacing vamps. That's an interesting theory about the guard. Pick the most menacing, not just for protection, but to make the Volturi seem frail and weak by comparison. We need more info about the Volturi, the females and the other guards we haven't met. We know there are nine permanent members and others that are more temporary. If the five Guard members we met (Jane, Alec, Felix, Demetri, and Heidi) are part of the Nine, we're missing four members that we don't know how they look or what powers they could have. Actually, we don't know what Alec's power is and his power is the reason the Volturi Guard is invincible. As if his sister's power isn't bad enough. What could Alec's be? Stephenie said it was similar to Jane's but better for fighting. So, instead of causing pain with his mind he kills with his mind? It would explain why he, turned as a child, is the leader of the Guard. That's frightening.

Alec's probably pretty good at what he does, and he didn't seem all that non-hospitable (sp?) to Bella for the few seconds we met him in New Moon
Wait, Jane and Heidi are part of the guard? Well, I suppose that makes sense
But what do you mean by missing four #s?? how do you know?- I never remember them mentioning anything in the Twilight series saying how many people they had.
But wow, so Heidi and Jane are only guards. Heidi for her beauty probably, and Jane for her gift.
Alec...his perception probably?

We don't know what Alec's talents are yet, but apparently they're much more ...frightening... then Janes'. Should be interesting.

New Moon when Alice is telling Bella about the Volturi. She mentions there are nine permanent members and others that are more transitory. So far, we've met five Gard members. There's four of the permanent Guard we don't know about, the transitory ones, and the two females that complete the Volturi with Aro, Marcus and Caius.

Aro is, hands down, my absolute favorite member of the Volturi. That childish nature vertainly is a part of him, but in a lot of ways, I think it's used as a brilliant facade to hide his true cunning nature; he's actually very smart. I suspect that he uses his six-year-old personna so he can throw others off guard and get exactly what he wants. I think people underestimate Aro - and I have a feeling that's exactly what he wants them to do, because he seems to get immense pleasure out of torturing and/or punsihing said people for underestimating him. God, Aroi's so much fun! ;D

He is just such an enigmatic and complex character. What I wouldn't give for an hour to talk to him even if I do get eaten later.

I'd have to say, of the Volturi and the Guard together, I effing love Jane. She is magnificent. In Eclipse, when it was HER that came to Forks to 'fix everything', I was psyched. I love her.
I am ashamed to admit that it has been quite a while since I read both New Moon and Twilight, so I don't remember too much about the Volturi. Jane is mainly what stuck in my head.

Jane, when you consider her past, is a truly tragic character. Turned when she was thirteen because her village tried to burn her and Alec at the stake (well, they burned her they just didn't kill her since Aro stepped in). Probably shunned before that with no one but her bother.
Can you blame her, really?

Well I'd like to start out that I love every member of the Volturi, but my favorites have got to be Aro, Jane, and Alec. . . Aro because he is so funny. . . Jane and Alec because their personal history has intrigued me. . . They've been through so much, I just want to learn more about them.
Now on to other business. . . I was reading on the Lexicon today. . . I was reading the character bios for the vampires mentioned as the Volturi guard. . . I know that it has been assumed that Heidi is a member of the Guard, but that isn't necessarily correct. .. On the Lexicon it only states Heidi as a "hunter" for the Volturi, so there is a major possibility that the series has only introduced 4 of the 9 permanent members of the Guard.
